Selfie Forest, interactive installation, large-format Mylar sheets attached to 45 trees throughout the Hormigo Forest, varying dimensions, Guatemala City
An uncanny world came into existence in this forest. A cultural heritage of Guatemala, it boasts a collection of more than one hundred “ant” trees (Platymiscium dimorphandrum). With this project I sought to capture a certain spirit of our time, whereby the virtual world replaces the real one. These reflections point to the iconic selfie, which, like everything else, becomes data for the internet. Those who looked for their own refraction in these trees experienced what it means to see one’s image and reality blurred, ensnared, seduced, and disoriented in a labyrinth of reflections, no longer able to move away from the object of contemplation.
